LUMINOSITY and COLOR

Steven Stelz, a long time and renowned stained glass artist and proprietor of the Stelz Studios in Flemington, NJ, has created a new kind of painting that is composed entirely of fired, colored glass powders and enamels.

Fall in Hunterdon County, NJ 20×24

Stelz’s paintings are created using a process similar to Pate de verre.  Pate de verre, a name termed by the French in the 19th century meaning “paste of glass” is one of the oldest known forms of glass working and dates back to the Middle East during the second century BC.  Stelz’s new “paintings in glass” convey extraordinary luminous qualities of both light and color. Light is captured through layers of transparent and opalescent glasses, some of which is reflected back to the viewer, creating an inner glow to the painting. This luminescent quality achieved in the Stelz glass paintings is impossible to achieve with any other painting mediums.
